Reproductive behavior of Cycloramphus dubius Miranda-Ribeiro (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae) Zoologia
Giaretta,Ariovaldo A; Cardoso,Adão J.
Cycloramphus dubius Miranda-Ribeiro. 1920 is a frog species from the coastal Atlantic Forest in Southeastern Brazil. It uses waterfalls of forested rivulets as breeding sites. The eggs are placed outside of water, between rock crevices or roots constantly wetted by water dripping. Clutches have about 60 eggs, and the tadpoles grow attached to rocks, out of water. Males of this species exhibit parental care, biting and/or pushing away strange objects approaching the egg masses. Two types of calls were identified in the spectrograms. The "advertisement calls" consist of juxtaposed pulses lasting 200ms; the "aggressive calls", also have the short pulses structure, and last around 300ms. The aggressive calls are emitted during territorial invasion.

Reproductive biology of Hyla goiana (Anura, Hylidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Menin,Marcelo; Silva,Rodrigo A.; Giaretta,Ariovaldo A..
Male-male and male-female interactions, reproductive habitat, and vocalizations of Hyla goiana B. Lutz, 1968 a member of H. polytaenia species group, are described. Three groups of calling males were surveyed along a small stream, at the Estação de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Ambiental de Galheiro, Perdizes municipality, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The mean distance between the nearest calling neighbors was 2.7 m, in accordance with an uniform distribution. Clutches (mean 180 eggs) were deposited in the stream, submerged and attached to plants. In two observed courtships the female moved towards a calling male that rapidly clasped her. In the male-male interaction, the males emitted advertisement and encounter calls and then engaged in physical combat....

Reproductive modes and fecundity of an assemblage of anuran amphibians in the Atlantic rainforest, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Hartmann,Marilia T; Hartmann,Paulo A; Haddad,Célio F. B.
Reproductive modes and size-fecundity relationships are described for anurans from Picinguaba, a region of Atlantic rainforest on the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We observed 13 reproductive modes, confirming a high diversity of modes in the Atlantic rainforest. This diversity of reproductive modes reflects the successful use of diversified and humid microhabitats by anurans in this biome. We measured the snout-vent length of 715 specimens of 40 species of anurans. The size-fecundity relationship of 12 species was analyzed. Female snout-vent lengths explained between 57% and 81% of clutch size variation. Anurans with aquatic modes laid more eggs than those with terrestrial or arboreal modes. Larger eggs were deposited by species with...

Restriction fragment analysis of the ribosomal DNA of Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys species (Anura, Leptodactylidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lourenço,Luciana B.; Garcia,Paulo C.A.; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei M..
Physical maps of the ribosomal RNA gene 28S of species belonging to the genera Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys were constructed, using five restriction endonucleases. The restriction sites for Bam HI, Bgl II, Bst EII, and Eco RI had similar positions in all species, although there were interspecific differences in the size of the restriction fragments obtained. An additional Pvu II site was found in Scythrophrys specimens from Piraquara (State of Paraná, Brazil) and from São Bento do Sul (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil), but not in the Scythrophrys specimens from Rancho Queimado (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil). This finding is in agreement with the hypothesis regarding the existence of two species in the genus Scythrophrys. On the other hand, the extra...

Resurrection of Hyla wavrini Parker (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae), a gladiator frog from northern South America Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
During field work in Venezuela and Brazil a difference in call was noticed between specimens of large hylids of the Hyla boans-group. Based on this and on morphological differences, it was concluded that Hyla wavrini Parker, 1936, up till now considered a synonym of Hyla boans (Linnaeus, 1758), should be considered a valid species, of which Hyla miranda-ribeiri Melin, 1941 is a synonym.

Seasonal testicular changes in Dendropsophus minutus Peters, 1872 (Anura, Hylidae) Biocell
Ferreira,Adelina; Mehanna,Mahmoud.
The reproductive cycle in anurans may be either continuous or discontinuous. These differences may be connected to seasonal climate changes and/or to anthropic activity. Forty adult male individuals of the Dendropsophus minutus species were collected during one year, in the municipality of Chapada dos Guimarães (Mato Grosso, Brazil). The testicles were studied under light and transmission electron microscopy. No variations were observed when the diameter of the seminiferous tubules and the thickness of the interstitial tissue were studied. However, changes in spermatogenesis were conspicuous and indicated that the reproductive cycle of D. minutus in Chapada dos Guimarães is discontinuous and seems related to variations in air temperature and rainfall.

Similaridade do sítio de vocalização em uma comunidade de anfíbios anuros na região noroeste do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil Zoologia
Rossa-Feres,Denise de C.; Jim,Jorge.
The breadth and overlap of male call site were determined for 15 anuran species from a temporary pond in Northwestern São Paulo State, Brazil. Four measurements were made at the point of capture of each calling male and the frequency of mating call was determined. There was a high overlap along each variable of call site, but less than 28% of possible species pairs presented high overlap for all variables. Taxonomically related species pairs calling from grass presented spatial and acoustic segregation, while those calling from the graund presented only acoustic segregation. The similarity of call site seems to be not only related to the taxonomic relationships but also with the body size and spatial heterageneity.

The amphibians of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: an updated and commented list Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Dorigo,Thiago Arnt; Vrcibradic,Davor; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
Abstract. The amphibian fauna of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in southeatern Brazil, is characterized by high species richness and rates of endemism, and is still insufficiently known. A first list of amphibian species with occurrence in the state was published in 2004 and reported 166 taxa, but since then many new records, descriptions of new taxa, and revalidations and synonymizations of species have consistently improved the knowledge about the state’s amphibian biodiversity. Thus, a review and update of that list was deemed necessary. We herein present an updated and commented list of amphibian species occurring in the state of Rio de Janeiro based on a survey of the literature. We recorded the occurrence of a total of 201 species of amphibians (197...

The peculiar breeding biology of the Amazonian frog Allobates subfolionidificans (Aromobatidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,JESUS R.D.; KAEFER,IGOR L.; LIMA,ALBERTINA P..
ABSTRACT Allobates subfolionidificans is a vulnerable and endemic leaf-litter frog from the state of Acre, Brazilian Amazonia. We monitored a population of A. subfolionidificans through regular censuses and mark-recapture of 181 individuals during an entire breeding season to characterize its reproductive behavior. The space use of A. subfolionidificans individuals differed between sexes, with males using smaller and more segregated spaces. Males defended territories and were aggressive against same-sex individuals, which was not the case in females. The daily cycle of calling activity showed peaks in the morning and in the afternoon, and the occurrence of reproductive events was positively correlated with monthly rainfall. The breeding behavior comprised...
